PLAYING WITH FIRE

CHAPTER 6
----------------------------------
Edith led us back to the dorms and into the room that belonged to her and Beverly.
“Where’s Beverly?” I asked.
“She… likes to eat the leftovers,” said Edith.
“Oh.” I say.
She motioned for us to sit on the bed, covered in stuffed cats and such, which I assumed was Beverly’s bed. Edith sat on the other one.
“I’m not so sure how else to start this, so… Once upon a time-”
I snorted.
“There were two sisters. One of them was me. The other’s name was Callie. They- we were best friends. Until I discovered my powers. Then Callie got jealous. I noticed she was reading this weird book for the next few months. About some lake that if you drank from it- which is gross- you would get powers. But you would turn evil or something. Then one day, Callie said, ‘I’m off to find Lake Mirotrad!’ and she didn’t come back. Years later, I created the Fire Clan and got a bunch of new technology, which I used to find her.”
“Where is she?” asked Alex.
“Somewhere along the border of North Dakota and Canada,” said Edith. “Last I checked, at least.”
“And I’m guessing you want us to go on a quest or something,” said Alex.
“Well… yeah.” said Edith. “But we finally have enough members for it. The minimum is 5 people. There’s you two, Rosie, Luna, and Jada. Everyone else is doing something.”
“Why cant you and Beverly go?” I asked.
“We’re the leaders. We have to make sure everything stays in order. We also need to make sure you aren’t completely useless once we send you out. We’re going to practice more, and the mission will start when I think you’re ready. First rule of life: Always trust my judgment.”
“Okay…” I said, trying not to jump off the bed, dig a hole, and cry until I die of dehydration or stress. Or both.
“I know it’s a lot for just your second day, but with enough training you guys will be fine. And trust me, Luna, Jada, and Rosie are great fighters. I bet you they’ll save your butts at least a couple times.” Said Edith. “Anyway, on a brighter note, you guys have until 9:30 to do whatever. Practice, take a nap, consider life choices, go do whatever.”
“Okay.” I said.
“Bye.” said Alex. “I’m gonna go train for a bit. You up for it?”
“Maybe in a bit”
“Okay, seeya.” he said. I waved and walked down a few halls and did this for a while. I realized I was utterly lost. I opened a random door. There were two girls in it. There was also what looked like a robot girl on a stand. I recognized one of the girls as Rosie. She turned and looked at me.
“Oh, hi Chloe!” she said. “Meet Luna.”
The other girl turned and looked at me.
“Oh, hello.” she said briefly, then turned back to whatever she was working on. Rosie walked over. Rosie started explaining what they were doing.
“We- well mostly Luna- were updating Jada.” she said.
“What?” I said, very confused.
“Jada is our… AI friend. She needed an update or she wouldn't work right in battle.
“Oh, okay. Interesting.” I say. “So what does Luna have to do?”
“I don't even know.” said Rosie. “Something about-”
“I have to open her files, remove any corrupted ones, put new data into her good files, then sync the ipad with her hard drive so she’ll be programmed to do it.” said Luna quickly. Then went back to… whatever she said.
“Yeah, that.” said Rosie.
“And… done!” said Luna. “Jada is done updating.” The robot’s eyes lit up, and Jada looked around.
“Greetings, newcomer!” she said, jumping off her stand. “I’m Jada.”
“”I’m Chloe,” I said.
“Great to meet you!” she looked at Luna. “What’s new?”
“You now have a targeting system in your camera, and a bug fix.”
“Okie dokie,” said Jada.
Luna looked at me.
“Oh! Hi. Sorry about before, I can get kinda… deep in my tech stuff. I’m Luna, you are?”
“”Chloe.” I said.
“Chloe. Nice to meet you. Edith told me about our upcoming mission. I think we’ll be great friends.” Luna took a deep breath.
“Well… um nice to meet you too Luna. And Jada. Now, uh… could someone tell me where the training room is?”
I met up with Alex in the training room, who was trying to do parkour.
“Hi,” I said. That apparently startled Alex, because he jumped and fell in the water.
“I’m sorry!” I said.
Alex muttered some words I shouldn’t repeat.
“It’s fine,” he said. “It was getting hot, anyway.”
After Alex dried off somewhat, we went back to our dorm. Since curfew wasn't for ten minutes we changed into more comfortable clothes that Beverly gave us. Then we played a long, boring round of rock paper scissors. I finally won. Then we sat on my bed staring at each other.
“So…” I started. “Any thoughts on our mission thing?”
“This sounds sexist, but the fact that I’m the only boy in our team.”
“I snorted. If anything, this mission will be interesting.
