PLAYING WITH FIRE

----------------------------------

CHAPTER 3

----------------------------------

The dorms were actually pretty nice. There was a bathroom with a small shower, two fairly large beds, some storage, and a spare room. Alex and I sat on our beds, facing each other. I looked down at my hands, which held a pen. (I’m not sure why, I just found a pen.)

I was thinking about what I had done. Now neither me or Alex could see our families again, and who knows what happened to mine? I started crying a little.

    “What’s wrong?” asked Alex.

    “I’m sorry,” I said quietly.

    “For what?”

“If I hadn’t gone into the woods, you wouldn’t have followed me, and-”

“It’s not your fault,” he said. “Of all people, it couldn’t have been your fault. If it is anyone’s fault, it’s Jax’s fault.”

    I looked up.

    “What?” I ask.

“My friends saw him bullying you. I’ve been bullied before, and it’s stressful.” he said. “And… I doubt you would try to set a house on fire purposely.”

I laughed. I rubbed my face and looked at the clock. It was 9:02.

    “Curfew,” I said.

    “Oh.” said Alex. “Well… night.”

    “Night,” I said.

“And don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Things happen.”

    Morning

I found a pad of paper! Now I can write in my journal.

Deary Diary,

Life in the Fire Clan is pretty interesting so far. Alex and I have become friends, which is good if I want to… you know… Um…

Take it further.

I still feel bad about last night, but like he said, I shouldn’t put a lot of pressure on myself.

Breakfast is in ten minutes. Beverly said to come early to get the good stuff.

I tucked the book in my backpack. I figured Alex would like it if I woke him up.

3 MIN L8R

Do all boys sleep like this?! Alex will not, under any circumstances, get out of bed.

At last, as I'm about to give up, I mutter to myself: “I guess somebody won’t get any pancakes.”

At the word ‘pancake’, Alex nearly catapulted out of bed.

“Pancakes!!” he said.

“Oookay!” I say. “Let’s go to the cafeteria.”
We meet with Beverly a few minutes before everyone else got there.

“Where are the pancakes?” I ask.

“Over here.” says Beverly. She points at a salad bar thing but with pancakes and toppings.

“Okay, thanks. Alex!”

“Yeah?”

“Panca-”

He zipped over before I even finished the word.

After we finished breakfast,we met Edith and a few other Fire Clan members, Jason and Rosie, at the weaponry.

I pulled out my throwing knives out. I looked them over. They were average blades-on-sticks. I found the flammable stuff. I dipped one knife in gasoline and used my fire to get… OMG A knife that’s on fire.

What did you expect? It looked cool, though. I thought about how I could toggle it. I decided to ask Edith.

“Hey Edith,” I said.

“Hi.” she said.

I told her my idea and the problem. She nodded.

“I’m actually a mechanic,” she said. “Maybe I can figure something out.”
“Okay, thanks!” I said. I went to see what Alex was doing. He was looking at his sword, and he didn't seem very pleased.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“I want to change this out.” he said. “Do you know where Edith is?”

“She’s doing something with mine, but no, I don't know.”

“Oh,” he said.

“I’m sure it would be fine,” I say. “Just swap it out.”

“Okay…” said Alex. He put the sword on the rack and looked at the other weapons.

Alex looked at something. It was a standard bow. Simple, but really cool.

“I want this.” he said, taking it off the rack.

Then Edith came in.

“I fixed up your knives, Chloe.” she said.

“Cool! Thanks Edith.” I said. She handed me the knives. They were way cooler than before.

“I switched out my weapon, is that okay?” asked Alex.

“Yep.” said Edith. “Now, who’s ready to start training?””
